The SAGD Process needs a large inventory of quality high-pressure steam to establish the underground steam chambers that heat and mobilize bitumen for recovery to the surface. This means continuous generation of high-pressure steam is essential.

The Water Treatment course focuses on Boiler Feed Water treating & the steam generation operations of a SAGD facility. The discussion follows clean water through Ion Exchange water softening & chemical treating processes to the Boiler Feed Water system. Other topics include the operation of a Once Through Steam Generator (OTSG), high-pressure steam separators & condensate recovery systems.

The discussion also explains how good heat management can let down high-pressure steam to medium-pressure, low-pressure & utility steam while using the high-pressure steam as a heating medium.

NSCC Marconi Campus (Sydney, Nova Scotia) has used Contendo’s SAGD Oil Sands Online since April 2013 as a component of the Process Operations – 4th Class Power Engineering program. The program serves to develop an understanding of processing equipment and knowledge of plant safety to prepare for a career as a field operator, process operator and/or plant operator. SAGD Oil Sands Online has become an important tool for providing students with an additional understanding of the operation of the Training Lab Process Units, including the process safety systems & distributed control system.

Keyano College (Fort McMurray, Alberta) offers a Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) Processing Certificate that includes Contendo’s SAGD Oil Sands Online as part of its Curriculum. Written by industry experts, the Contendo process operation models are shown with accurate visualizations in animated chapters. SAGD Oil Sands Online is offered through Keyano’s Continuing Education program in 4 parts (Well Pads, Bitumen Processing, Produced Water De-Oiling, and Water Treatment). Once completed, it is accepted as 37 credit hours toward the college diploma.
