The purpose of the SAGD Bitumen Processing section is to produce clean bitumen mixed with diluent. The liquid bitumen is cleaned by progressively removing water, solids and gas vapours. The correct Sales Oil density is achieved by mixing diluent into the bitumen stream at each stage of produced water removal.

The program serves to develop an understanding of processing equipment and knowledge of plant safety to prepare for a career as a field operator, process operator and/or plant operator. SAGD Oil Sands Online has become an important tool for providing students with an additional understanding of the operation of the Training Lab Process Units, including the process safety systems & distributed control system.
